At Carlton Primary School, Design Technology is an important part of the curriculum that teaches the children key skills and knowledge about the design and making process.

Our aims for Design Technology at Carlton Primary School are:

  1. All pupils will design develop plan, and communicate ideas.
  2. All pupils will work with tools, equipment, materials and components to make quality products.
  3. All pupils will evaluate processes and products.
  4. All pupils will learn about food and nutrition.

Integral to our Design Technology provision is providing excellent opportunities for the children to interrogate, design, make and evaluate a range of products. These will allow children to develop key skills using a variety of different media. This is delivered through high quality teaching.

Our curriculum is planned and sequenced so that Design Technology can be intertwined with other subjects, which gives the children a solid context for their learning.

We are committed to enabling all children to make excellent progress in their knowledge and skills in Design Technology. Our expectations for what should be achieved by the end of each year group are divided into four key areas:

Designing
Making
Evaluating
Food
We also believe that children should be provided with the opportunity to exceed these expectations and demonstrate ‘Mastery’ of these concepts where they are able. A clear definition for what mastery looks like in each year group has been developed.
