Pupil Premium Strategy Statement 2019/20
Pupil premium developments in our school:
Over the past few years we have made huge progress with our approach to Pupil Premium in our School. In 2018 we worked closely with North Yorkshire County Council colleagues as part of NYCC’s ‘Achievement Unlocked Cohort 4’. This was a focused strategy for improving outcomes for vulnerable learners.
We took a full and active part in this project, most notably working with key Pupil Premium partners, both within the county and the from around the country. In particularly we have enjoyed working closely with Marc Rowland, Head of Rosendale Research School SE21 London, https://rosendale.researchschool.org.uk/about-us/our-team
Marc is a nationally renowned Pupil premium champion, author and expert. Marc visited our school with NYCC colleagues to help carry out a detailed review of approach to Pupil premium as part of our Achievement Unlocked Cohort 4 work. This report has been discussed and used to develop our approach and strategies moving forward. Carlton staff have also visited Rosendale school to find out more about their approach, particularly with regards to the ReflectED programme.

Our key approaches to Pupil Premium at Carlton Primary School
At Carlton Primary School we are focusing on:
- A drive and focus on ‘Quality First’ teaching across school with a strong and positive T&L culture, agreed certainties and shared pedagogical approach
- A strong, caring and inclusive vision shared by all of the school team
- Partnership working with leading professionals
- Using evidence based research to inform decisions made for the use of Pupil Premium funding
- Targeting specific support for pupils who most need it
- Successfully focussing of changing language to be even more positive – e.g. aspirational and non-limiting, introduction of ‘CNAREY’s’
- Embedding the ReflectED project and approach in school
- Adopting a Metacognitive approach across school
- Promoting, using and embedding our Carlton Skill Set – including Reflection and Resilience, and Growth Mindset
- Committing to be reflective and evaluative in all we do
We believe that the above factors and approaches will ultimately support us in raising standards and outcomes (progress and attainment) for all children including vulnerable pupils.
In line with our vision and values, Carlton Primary School seeks to ensure the effectiveness of its use of the Pupil Premium funding. As a result, we have based our spending priorities on high quality research such as the EEF Toolkit.
The Sutton Trust-EEF Teaching and Learning Toolkit is an accessible summary of educational research which provides guidance for teachers and schools on how to use their resources to improve the attainment of disadvantaged pupils. Who is eligible for Pupil Premium?
Please speak to our School Business manager Mrs Rebecca Thompson if you would like to discuss eligibility for pupil premium funding.
We up-date our records annually to make sure we have an accurate account of the school population. However, if your circumstances change please inform the school office.
To qualify for free school meals you must fulfil one of the following criteria:
- Universal Credit, provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400, as assessed by earnings from up to three of your most recent assessment periods (£616.67 per month);
- Income Support;
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance;
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance;
- Support under part six of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999;
- The guarantee element of Pension Credit;
- Child Tax Credit, provided you are also not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual household gross income that does not exceed £16,190 (as assessed by HMRC); or
- Working Tax Credit run-on, paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit.
Please note that contributions-based benefits, including contribution-related Jobseekers’ Allowance do not entitle you to claim free school meals.
