School Uniform

We do not require uniform to be branded with the Carlton Primary School logo. However, should you choose, you can purchase our Carlton Primary School branded school uniform online or in person. 

All non-branded items are readily available from a range of supermarkets, online retailers and high street stores.

Our school uniform is as follows:

• White or red polo shirt or white shirt

• Red sweatshirt, cardigan, jumper or fleece

• Black or grey trousers, leggings, jogging bottoms, shorts, skorts, pinafore dress or skirt

• In warmer weather, children may choose to wear a red and white checked summer dress

• Grey, black, red or white tights or socks

• Black shoes (which cover the toes) or plain black trainers

PE kit is as follows:

• Red or white polo shirt or T-shirt

• Black or grey shorts, tracksuit bottoms or leggings

• Red or black sweatshirt, cardigan, jumper or fleece. Ideally, sweatshirts should not have hoods and hoodies should be avoided for health and safety reasons.

• Black pumps or black trainers (please note some indoor PE activities are completed barefoot, for example gymnastics)

• Swimming kit: Swimming attire should be modest, suitable for a primary school environment and appropriate for physical activity in the water, while allowing pupils to participate safely and comfortably in lessons. Bikinis are not suitable. One-piece swimming costumes are expected for those choosing to wear a swimming costume.

• Hair should be tied back for all PE lessons.

• Sports Day and House competitions: We politely request that children wear a plain T-shirt in their house colour (e.g. red, blue, yellow or green). If this is not possible, then a plain white T-shirt is also acceptable.

• For health and safety reasons, no jewellery should be worn during PE lessons. Parents and carers are asked to ensure that any jewellery, including earrings, is removed before school on days when PE takes place. If earrings cannot be removed, they must be taped before arriving at school for PE lessons.

Playtimes

• Welly boots (to enable children to play on the grass in wet weather)

• Waterproof coat/jacket (for wet, mild weather)

• Warm waterproof coat/jacket (for colder wet days)

• Hat or cap (for hot, sunny weather and colder days)

• Gloves and scarves are optional (for cold weather)

General uniform rules

• Non-Carlton uniform and PE kit should be as simple and plain as possible, with no logos or only small logos.

• We want our uniform to be fit for purpose. It should be comfortable and allow freedom of movement, for example when running and playing at breaktimes and lunchtimes.

• Our uniform should meet standards of modesty. For example, skirts should be of an appropriate length for a primary school setting (e.g. below the child’s knee).

• PE kits should be worn to school on PE days.

Jewellery

• Watches: Watches are permitted. Smart watches are not allowed. Please refer to the school's Mobile Phone Policy. As a general principle, children should not wear a watch if they are unable to tell the time. We reserve the right to ask a child to remove a watch during PE lessons or if it is distracting them or others from learning.

• Should a child's ears be pierced, only stud earrings are allowed.

• Bracelets, rings and necklaces should not be worn to school unless they are worn for religious or cultural reasons and have been discussed with the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher.

Bags

• Children may bring a small rucksack, bag and/or book bag to school.

Make-Up and Cosmetic Products

• Primary school children should not wear make-up to school. This includes false eyelashes, artificial nails (including acrylic or gel nails) and other cosmetic enhancements.

From September 2026, as we begin our OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) project, all Carlton pupils must have a pair of wellies and a suitable waterproof coat - we will be out at playtimes and lunchtimes in all weathers. In colder months this coat needs to be a warm coat. We will also start a welly pass down scheme, as people grow out of their boots!

We do hold some spare and second hand uniform in school. Please speak to one of the admin team should you need any support with school uniform. We will do all we can to support you in a sensitive manner.
